December Decisions

This interesting month: December presents options for offshore anglers wanting to catch dinner. Gag grouper season ends today, but there are other species to target: red grouper, kingfish and amberjack are top options.

Tips: The water will be slightly warmer in depths of 60-plus feet, allowing a bit more action. For bottom fishing, start at that depth then work west. Squid chunks should be the first baits. Grunts and other reef fish almost immediately eat chunk bait, causing a commotion. This simple winter procedure produces great action. Frozen sardines and live bait is more frequently dispersed once the reef fish are in a frenzy. But don’t be surprised if the squid and dead baits get more attention on certain spots because of the cooler water. We will work the depths seeking red grouper 60-90 feet this week. There should still be scattered kings at this depth, too.

Amberjack: We have been successful catching them in depths of 40 feet and deeper. The farther you travel, the more abundant they will be around artificial reefs, springs and wrecks.
