With every passing cold front the gag grouper fishing gets better. Concentrate on ledges and rock piles instead of the normal slow rolls in the bottom where you might target red grouper. Live baits such as pinfish, grass grunts, squirrelfish and blue runners will continue to outproduce frozen baits until the water temperatures reach the low 60s, when the metabolism of these fish will slow to a crawl. When this happens, larger frozen baits such as sardines, squid and cigar minnows will be our main offerings. Normal bottom digging tackle such as a 4/0 loaded with 60- to 80-pound mono has been the mainstay for many years.
