Grouper Need a Little Goosing in the Cold

Offshore: Bottom fishing has been affected by cold fronts, so anglers need patience. We had a great grouper bite in 60 feet of water, but it took 15 minutes before the big fish ate. The first few baits were mostly rejected. A porgy or grunt would nibble, then back away. A change in our presentation got the fish biting.

Tactic: When fish nibbled, we instantly dropped the rod tip, allowing 6 inches of line to go slack. Each time we did a drop, the grunts would grab the bait with more commitment. After about five minutes, the big grouper joined in.
